According to a report by Upcomer, League of Legends’ developer, Riot Games may be shifting the venue of the League of Legends 2021 World Championship. The event will be taking place in Europe instead of China according to Upcomer’s sources. It is reported that Riot Games has run into difficulties securing travel for production crews to China despite making an early decision to host the event in Asia. An official update is expected from Riot Games very soon with regards to the change of venue. Riot Games is yet to officially confirm the change, but if it is true, fans in China who were eager to catch the event live might be disappointed.

Riot Games is yet to confirm the tournament locations and dates for Worlds 2021

Worlds was originally meant to be a multi-city event in China – Shanghai, Qingdao, Wuhan, Chengdu and Shenzhen. 2020’s world championship was held in China without spectators, up until the grand finals. Riot Games allowed a limited number of fans at the grand finals due to the ongoing global pandemic. South Korean team, Damwon Gaming (now known as DWG KIA) managed to bring the League of Legends World Championship title to South Korea for the first time since 2017.

The 2021 Worlds event is reportedly going to be held in Europe. The region hosted the 2019 World Championship, which was one of the biggest League of Legends LAN events till date. Players competed in Berlin, Madrid, and Paris and it ended with Chinese team, FunPlus Phoenix beating G2 Esports at the grand finals.

The teams which have qualified for League of Legends Worlds 2021 include:

  • DWG KIA (South Korea)

  • Gen.G (South Korea)

  • T1 (South Korea)

  • 100 Thieves (North America)

  • Team Liquid (North America)

  • Cloud9 (North America)

  • Rogue (Europe)

  • MAD Lions (Europe)

  • Fnatic (Europe)

The final slot will be allotted to NongShim REDFORCE, Liiv SANDBOX, or Hanwha Life Esports. The four teams are still competing in the Korean qualifiers in a bid to be a part of Worlds 2021.

Riot Games is yet to announce the tournament location and dates and the reports of Worlds 2021 moving to Europe are yet to be officially confirmed. With the ongoing pandemic forcing governments to have stringent health regulations and checks in place, fans would want Riot Games to host the event for its staff, players, and audience to be in a safe environment.
