OB.Neon has tasted victory in their first series of the TI10 SEA qualifier, defeating Motivate.Trust Gaming comprehensively. The two teams that are quite similar in their raw talent were expected to face off in a close fight, but OB.Neon proved to be a cut above their opponents, displaying superior drafting, laning, and mid to late game transition to win 2-0. In the initial phases of the first game, Motivate.Trust Gaming showed signs of life, but in the latter portions and in the second match, OB.Neon trounced Motivate.Trust Gaming. OB.Neon proceeds to the next round of the TI10 SEA qualifier upper bracket while Motivate.Trust Gaming falls to the lower bracket.
OB.Neon hammers Motivate.Trust Gaming to take a 2-0 series win in the TI10 SEA qualifier
Game 1 saw a relatively harmless laning phase as both teams seemed to be content farming. Motivate.Trust Gaming did decent to avoid enemy ganks but at one stage, JaCkky’s Terrorblade was the only one who boasted of some significant networth. OB.Neon had better networth distribution with Natsumi-’s Phantom Assassin’s farm skyrocketing. Executing teamfights proved to be incredibly difficult for Motivate.Trust Gaming, who lost the game in 43 minutes.
Game 2 was a stomp by OB.Neon as they initially outdrafted their enemies and then went on to flawlessly execute their draft. Natsumi- was unkillable on his safe lane Bristleback while Enryu made all the space for his time on his offlane Broodmother. A convincing performance from skem and his teammates meant that they secured the win in just 20 minutes.
Here are some highlights of the series.
OB.Neon was ruled out by many as the favorite to take the last remaining TI10 spot from the region, primarily because of a decline in form over the last couple of months and the departure of longstanding position four player, PlayHard. Skem and his teammates have, however, shown at the Singapore Major that they strike hard when they are considered underdogs. The team was outstanding today in both their drafting and execution of teamfights. OB.Neon will now look to carry this momentum into the next round of the TI10 SEA qualifier upper bracket against Fnatic.
Motivate.Trust Gaming, on the other hand, fell short of the expectations many had for them coming into this qualifier. They did not display their full potential and true skills. They will have to move forward from such a defeat in a grueling double elimination bracket and continue to strive for the TI10 slot in the lower bracket. They will face Cignal Ultra in their next series.
Interview: OB.Neon skem talks about his transition to the position four role
Before the TI10 qualifier, OB.Neon made a roster change by welcoming Filipino player, Michael Roi “Enryu” Ladines, into the roster in place of Prieme Ejay “PlayHard” Banquil. Since Enryu joined in the offlane, captain Rolen Andrei Gabriel “skem” Ong had to make a transition from the offlane to the position four role.
Talking about this change in the post-game winner’s interview, skem said,
“I was so happy because, for a long time, I have already wanted to play support. (On why he was so keen on this transition) Because I am the drafter and the captain of the team, I can focus on captaining the team properly if I am the support.
Yes, I agree with that one (on SEA having a lot of talented players but not many established leaders). Only a few players have the experience. I also have a few experiences with other captains like EE, Misery, and Mushi I think.”
Additionally, skem said that if he had not been the captain of the team, he would have been a better offlaner.
